Freedom to protest is a cornerstone of any democracy but are anti-monarchy protesters being allowed to get too close to the royals? During Trooping the Colour, Princess Kate couldn't conceal her displeasure as her carriage was driven past a sea of unfavourable placards. And just yesterday senior royals, including the King and Queen and Prince William, were met by a similar wall of dissent as they attended the Order of the Thistle service at St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. Are these protesters spoiling the spectacle for everyone else, or would any attempt to keep them farther away from the royals on such occasions be an insidious step towards authoritarianism?
