Oprah Winfrey, 72, has revisited her landmark interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which aired in 2021. In a retrospective interview for Vanity Fair, the presenter analysed her line of questioning to the Duchess of Sussex, when they were speaking about life within the royal family.
Oprah asked Meghan if she was "silent" or "silenced" once she became part of the institution, and Meghan simply replied: "The latter." She defended her question by saying: "I wanted to be clear because, 'Was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk?' That's why I said that. I said it for clarification because I didn’t want later to hear, 'Well, no, it wasn’t that. It really was that I was silenced. They wouldn’t let me talk.' So it was all for clarification."
The presenter also commented on her dramatic hand actions that accompanied her question, remarking: "I don't think I've done it since. I don't know where the hell that came from."
Another topic that Meghan addressed in the same chat was centred around their son Archie's skin colour.
The Duchess of Sussex told Oprah when she was pregnant with her firstborn there were "concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born".
A stunned Oprah asked, "Who is having that conversation?" When pressed by the US chat show host to identify the person, Meghan simply said: "I think that would be very damaging to them".
Prince William was asked about these accusations days later at an engagement. "We are very much not a racist family," he sternly told the royal reporters.
Oprah's candid comments about Harry and Meghan's home
The chat show host is not one to mince her words, and she was very honest when she saw where the Sussexes lived in the UK, when they resided at Nottingham Cottage. "Oprah came over for tea, didn't she?" said Harry to Meghan. "When she came over, she sat down, she said, 'No one would ever believe it'," presumably referring to the bijou size of the place.
Prince Harry admitted to being "embarrassed" about the humble nature of the property when he wrote about showing it to his then-girlfriend Meghan Markle in his memoir Spare.
The pair later upgraded to Frogmore Cottage, but then stepped down as senior royals and relocated to the US - now they have a vast Montecito mansion where they reside with their two children. Features of the home include an outdoor pool, huge playpark and a wine cellar.
The mansion appears to be their dream home, and in an interview with The Cut, Meghan revealed they fell in love with the property instantly. "We did everything we could to get this house," Meghan told The Cut. "Because you walk in and go… Joy. And exhale. And calm. It's healing. You feel free."
