The King has officially arrived at Balmoral for the formal welcome ceremony marking the start of his summer residence there.

Charles, 77, has continued to complete sporadic engagements after arriving in Scotland earlier this month, including the Mey Highland Games and visits to the local community.

Wearing a kilt, he was welcomed to the residence on Tuesday in a small ceremony, inspecting a Guard of Honour formed of the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

As is tradition, he will now take up summer residence at the Scottish Castle, which was beloved by the late Queen, before resuming his official schedule in September.

Charles, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, gently stroked the adorable pony's nose and was seen laughing as he was welcomed by a Guard of Honour.

The King was dressed smartly in a traditional kilt and green stockings, as well as a tweed blazer.

He shook hands with well-wishers gathered behind a barrier.

The King and Queen are expected to welcome members of their families to Balmoral in the coming weeks, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla was spotted out shopping on Monday in the village of Ballater with her sister Annabel Elliot, 77, daughter Laura Lopes, 48, and granddaughter Eliza, 18.

It's also expected that the King will host Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his wife Marie-France for a weekend at Balmoral.

The King has been busy in Scotland this August, attending the Castle of Mey Games, meeting the Assynt Mountain Rescue team, and engaging with the communities of Halkirk and Castletown, including opening a distillery housed in a restored former mill building.

He was also spotted attending church at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral last Sunday.

Stationed outside the front gate of Balmoral were the first two members of the revived Balmoral Highlanders.

This has been reestablished by the King after it was disbanded in 1936 under His Majesty's great-grandfather, King George V.

They are employees of the Balmoral estate and will take part in the Braemar Gathering in September.

In keeping with tradition, each Highlander carries a ceremonial Lochaber Axe and wears a Highland uniform which takes inspiration from the original uniform worn in the late 1800s.

The kilt and plaid are made from the Balmoral Glen Gelder tartan, which was designed by The Scottish Tartans Authority at the request of His Majesty.
