Sarah Ferguson remained a key part of the royal family following her 1996 divorce from Prince Andrew.

The former couple, who share daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, exchanged vows at Westminster Abbey on 23 July 1986. Buckingham Palace confirmed an "amicable" split in 1992, and the pair divorced four years later. They continued to live together at Royal Lodge in the years that followed, with Sarah famously describing herself and Andrew as the "happiest divorced couple in the world".

However, their once-strong bond was shattered by their links to Jeffrey Epstein. Both lost their major honours and titles in October 2025 after revelations emerged regarding their ties to the convicted offender, resulting in their departure from Royal Lodge.

While Sarah demonstrated a close bond with the late Queen Elizabeth II and spoke highly of her ex-husband in the past, her divorce and loss of title inevitably led to changes in the family dynamic.

So is the 67-year-old now? HELLO! takes a look at how life evolved following the couple's split…

Living situations

Sarah and Andrew lived together at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park for 22 years, from 2004 to 2026. Sunninghill Park in Ascot was also gifted to the former couple by the Queen, featuring an on-site tennis court and swimming pool. While Sarah temporarily left the family home between 1994 and 1997, she moved back before the family relocated to Royal Lodge.

Speaking about her unusual living arrangements to The Daily Mail in 2018 the Duchess said: "Andrew and I, we're the happiest divorced couple in the world – extraordinary, really, isn't it. We live in the same house, but then, it's a big house, so that's OK. But I think it's really good that we believe in compromise and communication and compassion. And family."

However, as of April 2026, Andrew resides at Marsh Farm on the King's Sandringham Estate after being instructed to leave Royal Lodge. Meanwhile, Sarah has spent considerable time outside the UK, though reports indicate she is renting a six-bedroom gated property in the Home Counties.

The reason for Sarah and Andrew's soured relationship is not completely clear, but a source told The Times: "The red setter, as she's known, is not welcome at Marsh Farm. She's persona non grata as far as Andrew is concerned."

It was reported that Sarah planned to return to the UK six months after her eviction from Royal Lodge, though she has not been publicly sighted in Britain.

King Charles and other members of the royal family attended church on Christmas Day at Sandringham in 2025, their traditional holiday gathering spot. Although both Beatrice and Eugenie attended with their partners, their parents were absent. The last time Sarah attended Sandringham was in December 2023, having been absent from the traditional gathering since.

Weddings

A royal wedding is a time for families to gather, but Sarah did not join Andrew, Beatrice, and Eugenie at the nuptials of Prince William and Princess Kate, or Zara and Mike Tindall, in 2011.

"I didn't think I was probably worthy to go to their wedding," Sarah told Town & Country in 2021 regarding the Prince and Princess of Wales. "I took myself to Thailand, actually, to be far away from it so that I could try and heal."

Seven years later, she was among the guests at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding. She implied Queen Elizabeth extended the invitation during an interview with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain in 2018.

"I just think that Her Majesty is an incredible lady," Sarah explained. "What an icon to the country, and one of the finest people I've ever met. She leads by such example and to include me is a wonderful gesture... Her Majesty knew me from a little naughty age ten... I can't thank Her Majesty enough for being so steadfast to me."

Sarah revealed her delight at the crowd cheering upon her arrival, saying: "I wanted to cry [when the crowd cheered]. It was extraordinary and I looked around like, 'Are they doing that for me?'. Then someone shouted 'Fergie'."

Family occasions

Sarah has missed important family events

Weddings are not the only family occasions Sarah has missed. She was absent from the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral in April 2021 – which operated under a restricted guest list during the pandemic – as well as his memorial service in March 2022, which was attended by her former husband, her two daughters, and their respective spouses, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank.
