Instagram has become a great hub for travel inspiration, with photos of iconic landmarks and tourist destination a regular sight on our newsfeed as friends and family share their holiday photos online. And it appears that some destinations are far more Instagrammable than others, according to new research from Iconosquare.
The team at the social media analytics platform has announced the top ten most popular cities on Instagram based on how many times they have been mentioned in a hashtag on the site since its launch in 2010. Their research showed that there was one clear winner out of the UK's top 45 cities - London.
London has been revealed as the most popular UK city on Instagram
The capital city has received some 72.5 million mentions in the last six-and-a-half years, no doubt alongside photos of popular landmarks such as the London Eye, Big Ben and Houses of Parliament. It is no wonder London topped the list; as well as being home to over eight million people, it is also a popular tourist hotspot both with visitors from the UK and overseas.
London received over six times more mentions than its closest rival Manchester, which was tagged some 6.5 million times by both residents and tourists alike. Next on the list was Liverpool with 5.1 million mentions, while Scotland's capital city of Edinburgh was referred to over 4.2 million times. One of the UK's most popular beach destinations, Brighton, rounded off the top five with 3.4 million posts, likely showing off the famous Brighton Pier, The Lanes and the city's pebble beach.
