Doris Day passed away on May 13, 2019, at the age of 97 and April 3 would have been her birthday.
The Calamity Jane star was married a total of four times to Al Jorden, George Weidler, Martin "Marty" Melcher and Barry Comden.
She only had one son, Terry Paul with her first husband, whom she married at the age of 19. Now we're delving into her love life below.
Despite being a Hollywood star, Doris' dream was to be married and she said: "'It was the only ambition I ever had. Not to be a dancer or Hollywood movie star, but to be a housewife in a good marriage," per the UK Standard.
Her early marriages
Doris met her first husband Al, who was a trombonist, when she was 16 and he was 23. He played in the same band called Sign Of The Drum in Cincinnati and the pair got married in 1941.
The actress revealed in her autobiography: Doris Day: Her Own Story: "What had represented to me as love emerged as jealousy — a pathologic jealousy that was destined to make a nightmare out of the next few years of my life."
Al was physically abusive throughout their marriage and while Doris was pregnant with Terry, which led to them getting divorced after being married for two years.
Al committed suicide in 1967. Their son Terry tragically passed away in 2004 from melanoma.
In 1946, Doris got married to her second husband and saxophonist George Weidler right when her career was getting a breakthrough moment, as she underwent a screen test at Warner Bros. During their marriage, George cheated on her and the pair divorced after three years.
Her later marriages
Doris got married for the third time to Marty Mecher in 1951. He secretly stole Doris' $20 million earrings, leaving her in debt with $450,000.
She shared in her book: "This man who had slept with me, adopted my son, managed my career and business life."
Marty was also physically abusive towards Terry, which led the two to live in separate homes. They remained together up until the time he passed away in 1968.
Her last marriage was to Barry Comden, who was 12 years younger than her. They got married in 1976, when Doris was 52 and they stayed together for five years.
He revealed to the Sunday Mail in 1996: "She had 14 dogs, and the final straw was when I was kicked out of bed to make way for Tiger, a poodle."
She expressed about her autobiography: "I'd like to deal with the true, honest story of who I really am. This image I've got … It has nothing to do with the life I've had."
