Erin Moran found fame when she was just 13 after landing the role of Joanie Cunningham on Happy Days, but not everyone in her life enjoyed the notoriety that followed her, long after the show ended.

The late actress, who died on April 22, 2017, at age 56, of natural complications from advanced cancer, was married twice, but her first husband, Rocky Ferguson, struggled with her fame.

Following their complicated romance, she went on to wed Walmart employee Steve Fleischmann, remaining with him until her death.

Ex-husband

Not much is known about Erin and her first husband, Rocky Ferguson. The former couple tied the knot in 1987 and divorced in 1993.

In 2007, she shared an insight into their marriage, revealing that Rocky struggled with her fame and wanted her to "not be recognizable to fans."

"He wanted me to lie in who I was and if anyone recognized me to say no I wasn't," she told People. "And that's the pressure he put on me."

While Erin admitted she thought Rocky's dislike of her fame was due to jealousy and his wanting to be the center of attention, she didn't dredge up the past.

"I really don't want to delve into his personality or why he did things," she said. "I don't even want to go there because it's pointless."

Erin married her second husband, Steve Fleischmann, in 1993 after her divorce from Rocky was finalized. The couple met on April 22, 1992, and stayed together until her death on April 22, 2017.

The couple didn't publicly discuss their marriage during her lifetime, but Steve wrote an emotional open letter after her death, detailing her final days.

He penned in part: "She woke up on the 22nd [April], she was not 100%. She needed Kleenex, so i went to the store and came back. She was there watching T.V in bed. I laid down next to her held her right hand in my left. I feel asleep woke up about a hour later still holding her hand and she was gone, she was just gone."

Career

Erin starred as Joanie Cunningham on Happy Days from 1974 to 1984. However, behind the scenes, Erin was feeling Hollywood pressure: in a 1983 interview, Erin claimed that by the time she had turned 15, producers "suddenly wanted me to lose weight and become this sexy thing."

In 1982, Erin began starring in the spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi and later claimed she would have preferred to stay as a cast member of Happy Days. "I liked working with the people. But I didn't even want to do it," she said. "I wanted to stay on Happy Days."

The spin-off was canceled after 17 episodes, and Erin's career never recovered.

Erin Moran struggled financially after Happy Days

Money troubles

Erin struggled financially, and in 2011, she joined several Happy Days co-stars in a $10 million lawsuit against CBS for unpaid royalties. In 2012, they were each awarded $65,000 after settling out of court.

That same year, it emerged that Erin had been served eviction papers and her California home had been foreclosed on in 2010. She and her husband, Steve, were effectively homeless before they moved into a trailer park in Indiana with his ailing mother, so Erin could act as her caregiver, her publicist confirmed to ABC News in June 2012.

Death

In late 2016, Erin was diagnosed with stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma (throat cancer), a diagnosis she didn't reveal publicly. She died on April 22, 2017, at age 56, with police in Harrison County, Indiana, confirming "no illegal narcotics were involved in her death."

The clarification came after speculation around her cause of death was amplified by comments made by her former co-star Scott Baio, who said: "For me, you do drugs or drink, you're going to die. I'm sorry if that's cold, but God gave you a brain, gave you the will to live and thrive, and you gotta take care of yourself." An autopsy confirmed she died of natural complications from advanced cancer.
