8 forgotten action heroes of the 1980s – where are they now

The actor was known for his role as John Rambo in the Rambo films, which first debuted in 1982, and as Rocky Balboa in the Rocky franchise, which kickstarted in 1976. Sylvester's screen presence was defined by his unique blend of rugged toughness and emotional vulnerability, making him one of the most compelling action stars.

Sylvester has remained present in the industry and stars as Dwight "The General" Manfredi in the crime drama Tulsa King as well as releasing his memoir, The Steps. He resides in Palm Beach, Florida, with his wife Jennifer Flavin, and their daughters.

Mel Gibson rose to action fame through his roles in the Mad Max series and the Lethal Weapon franchise. He portrayed witty yet flawed characters. 

The star now spends more time behind the camera. He is directing and co-writing The Resurrection of the Christ, the sequel to The Passion of the Christ. Away from the spotlight, he has nine children with three different women: Hannah, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas with ex-wife Robyn Moore; Lucia with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva; and Lars with ex-partner Rosalind Ross.

Harrison Ford captured hearts around the world for his portrayals of Han Solo in the 1997 Star Wars movie and Indiana Jones in the 1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark. He possessed a rugged charm with a cheeky suave.

Today, Harrison continues to act and in 2026 he received the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award. Harrison opened up about his pending retirement plans with his wife Calista Flockhart in an interview with Entertainment Tonight while gracing the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of 1923's Season Two.  

In response to a question asking what would push him to retire and spend more time at home with his wife, the actor said: "When you forget my name."

Few stars embodied the action boom of the 1980s quite like Arnold Schwarzenegger. With career-defining performances in Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, he established himself as the ultimate muscle machine.

Most recently, Arnold starred in the Netflix action-comedy series FUBAR. As for his personal life, Maria Shriver filed for divorce from the actor in May 2011 following 25 years of marriage. The split came after it was revealed that Arnold had an affair with the family’s housekeeper, resulting in the birth of his son, Joseph Baena. The former couple share four children together. Arnold is currently in a relationship with Heather Milligan.

Bruce Willis offered unexpected thrills with his portrayal as John McClane in the Die Hard franchise.

The actor and Emma Hemming tied the knot back in December 2009 and share two daughters – Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. Bruce was previously married to Demi Moore from 1987 to 2000, during which time they welcomed daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31. Demi, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah still remain close with Bruce, and also share strong relationships with Emma, Mabel and Evelyn.

Bruce was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, followed by frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD) in 2023. Symptoms typically start between the ages of 40 and 65, but Frontotemporal Degeneration – the condition named in doctors' updated prognosis for Bruce – is the most common form of dementia for people under 60, and there are no treatments for the disease. FTD affects men and women equally, and there are no treatments for the disease.

Chuck Norris was synonymous with his martial arts stunts, with leading roles in Star of Missing in Action and The Delta Force. He also founded the American Tang Soo Do and the Chuck Norris System.

The actor died on March 19 after being hospitalized in Hawaii following a medical emergency just 10 days after he rang in his 86th trip around the sun. His family posted a statement to Instagram announcing Chuck's death, writing: "While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace."

Chuck largely retired from acting, but leading up to his death, posted occasional glimpses into his life. The actor left behind his wife, Gena O'Kelley, and his five children. 

Kurt Russell was one of the most charismatic stars of the era, with roles in Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, and Tango & Cash.

Today, Kurt continues to make waves in the acting world and even starred alongside his son, Wyatt Russell, in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season Two. Wyatt is Kurt and Goldie Hawn's only child together, but he is part of a blended family that includes brother Boston, whom Kurt welcomed with ex-wife Season Hubley, and Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson from Goldie's previous relationship with Bill Hudson.

Carl Weathers rose to Hollywood fame with his performances in Predator and the Rocky series. He transformed Apollo from Rocky Balboa’s rival into one of the franchise's most beloved characters.

The actor passed away in February 2024 at the age of 76. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
