Fashion legend Bob Mackie's most iconic designs in photos following death at 87: from Cher to Beyoncé

One of Mackie's very first designs, created for haute couturier Jean Louis, was the skin-toned crystal covered dress that was eventually worn by Marilyn Monroe to famously sing "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy.

Marilyn's dress inspired Mackie to create a similar, but sexier gown for Madonna for the 1991 Academy Awards, which paid homage to old Hollywood starlets. The gown was paired with a white fur stole, and shimmered on stage when she performed her hit "Sooner or Later."

Mackie created all of the costumes for the 11-year run of The Carol Burnett Show, the most famous definitely being the curtain rod dress the comedienne wore for a 1976 sketch titled "Went with the Wind!"

Mackie's creative partnership with Cher was expansive and truly his magic at its peak. While he designed several iconic looks for her (the golden religious gown for her 2019 tour and her 1974 Met Gala "naked" dress come to mind), it's her 1986 outfit for the Academy Awards that reigns supreme. Cher used the over-the-top ensemble to poke fun at her snub for Mask, and she returned in 1988 in another Mackie creation to take home her trophy for Moonstruck.

Diana Ross' partnership with the late designer also spanned decades, from her time with The Supremes to her many tours in the 21st century. It's a hard choice to make, but few looks make as much of an impact as her massive floral look for her appearance on the 1969 special "G.I.T. on Broadway," which paired a simple tube dress with a massive wig.

During 1978 and 1979, just a few short years into her solo career, Tina Turner debuted Mackie's legendary "flame dress." Originally paired with a dramatic cape made of orange turkey feathers, the dress itself features several strips of red, orange and yellow fabric emblazoned with stones. The fiery look has become one of the most recognizable fashion pieces in modern history.

Mackie was close friends with RuPaul, appearing as the very first guest judge ever on RuPaul's Drag Race, and was also the very first honoree of the show's "Giving Us Life-Time Achievement Award" in 2023. Their collaboration hit its zenith early on, with RuPaul's 1995 massive silver design for the VH1 Fashion and Music Awards, paired with a wing-like cape and a spin on the "flame dress."

In 2005, for the Kennedy Center Honors, Beyoncé wore a recreation of Tina's "flame dress," made in collaboration with Mackie, for her performance paying tribute to the "Proud Mary" hitmaker, arguably the most memorable version of the outfit outside the original.

Elton John's flamboyant style matched perfectly with Mackie's, especially when it came to putting a spin on the traditionally masculine Dodgers uniform. For his 1975 show at Dodger Stadium, Elton wore a sequin-covered uniform, featuring extra Swarovski crystals and mirrors around the neck.

The late Dolly Parton, who passed away three weeks before Mackie did, served as a muse for the designer, and wore several of his sparkly creations. One of their greatest collaborations came in the form of the structured rose gold gown she wore for her 1987 special "Dolly," paired with big '80s hair and silver piping.

For her triumphant performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, which saw her take home her very first golden gramophones, Miley Cyrus tapped her godmother's designer for an embellished silver dress with a midriff cutout, colorful stones, and shimmering tassels.

To induct Cher into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach pulled from Mackie's 2001 collection for a look that perfectly represented the "Believe" singer. Zendaya wore an ab-baring nude halter dress with criss-cross straps, and sleek, jet black hair to match the singer.
