Taylor Swift had an unexpected celebrity companion for her latest football outing, joining Tom Cruise in the stands as she cheered on husband Travis Kelce.

The singer attended the Kansas City Chiefs' season opener against the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, 14 September, while the Emmy Awards were taking place in Los Angeles.

Photographs captured Taylor laughing beside the Mission: Impossible star, with the pair chatting and reacting to the action from their suite.

It was a football outing with family and fellow guests, with Travis's mother Donna Kelce and Taylor's father Scott Swift also pictured nearby. And although Taylor was miles from the Emmys carpet, she still managed to surprise viewers watching television's biggest night.

Taylor appeared in high spirits as she followed the game beside Tom, smiling broadly in one photograph while the actor watched the field.

Another image captured both stars cheering, with Scott applauding nearby. Donna, dressed in a red Chiefs jersey, was also seen enjoying the evening alongside them.

Taylor embraced the team's colours in a red-and-cream checked polo dress from Guest in Residence, the fashion label founded by her friend Gigi Hadid. She wore her hair loose with her signature fringe, finishing the look with winged eyeliner and red lipstick. Tom kept his outfit understated in a dark collared top.

Tom Cruise's connection to Taylor and Travis

Tom's appearance alongside Taylor follows an earlier encounter with the couple during her record-breaking Eras Tour.

The actor attended her Wembley Stadium concert on 22 June 2024, joining a celebrity-filled VIP area that also included Travis, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and director Greta Gerwig.

Footage from the concert captured Tom enjoying the music and sharing a warm moment with Travis, while other guests danced along.

Monday's outing placed Taylor in the audience herself, supporting Travis during his first game of the new season. It also marked her first Chiefs game since the couple married over the summer.

Taylor Swift's skips Emmys

Despite being in Kansas City, Taylor still featured in the Emmys broadcast through a pre-recorded comedy sketch with host Mariska Hargitay.

The Law & Order: SVU-inspired segment turned speculation about Taylor's attendance into a case for the show's detectives to solve. Taylor appeared in a tailored suit, joining Mariska and her co-stars as they investigated whether the singer would turn up at the ceremony.

In the photograph from the broadcast, Taylor stood beside Mariska holding a fluffy white cat, with a board of photographs and clues behind them.

Her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — The Final Show, had been nominated at this year's Creative Arts Emmys. Its Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category was won by The Muppet Show.

Speaking to Emmy voters in August, Taylor explained why preserving the atmosphere of the tour had mattered to her when making the film.

What Taylor Swift has said about supporting Travis

Taylor has become a familiar presence at Chiefs games since first attending in September 2023. In her TIME Person of the Year interview that December, she spoke about enjoying football and supporting Travis despite the attention surrounding her appearances.

She explained that she had no control over how often television cameras showed her during a game, with her focus firmly on the person she had come to watch. Her growing enthusiasm for the sport was clear. "Football is awesome, it turns out," Taylor told the magazine. "I've been missing out my whole life."
