Warren Buffett is making a change. The 96-year-old billionaire investor, who is worth $144.7 billion, shared news with his shareholders on Friday, September 18 that he stepped down from his role as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway after more than five decades.

"Father Time always wins," he wrote in a letter to shareholders. "He has, however, been generous with me. He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead.

Warren's oldest son, Howard G. Buffett, 71, will succeed him as chairman. As the billionaire moves into a new chapter in his life, meet his three children who will carry on his legacy.

Warren's oldest daughter, Susan "Susie" Alice Buffett, followed in her dad's footsteps to work in philanthropy. The 73-year-old is worth an estimated $2 billion and is the chair of the Sherwood Foundation, which provides grants to organizations in Nebraska, the Buffett's home state.

In 2021, Susie joined the board of Berkshire Hathaway and has been tasked, alongside her brothers, to donate all of their dad's wealth to foundations of his choice following his death.

Susie Buffett's personal life

Susie is named after her mom, Susan Thompson Buffett, who was married to Warren until her death in 2004. She studied economics and social ecology in college before moving to Washington, D.C. to work in media.

In 1983, Susie married her first husband, Allen Greenberg. The couple share two children, who Susie chooses to keep out of the public eye. After 12 years together, the couple divorced. Susie was then married to John Thomas Foley for seven years until his death in 2024.

Howard G. Buffett

Howard is Warren's oldest son and will take over as the non-executive chairman at Berkshire Hathaway. The multimillionaire has been active in business, politics, agriculture, and philanthropy throughout his life.

He is also a prolific writer who has published dozens of books on a range of topics from biology to sociology. In 1999, Howard established the The Howard G. Buffett Foundation with the mission to improve the standard of living and quality of life.

Howard Buffett's work and legacy

Howard has big shoes to fill at the trillion dollar company. "Greg [Abel] runs the company; Howard will guard its culture and values – both worth more than anything on our balance sheet," Warren wrote Friday. "Think of Howard as a policy the shareholders own and hope never to claim against."

The new chairman of Berkshire Hathaway has one son, Howard Warren Buffett, who he shares with his second wife, Devon Morse. Like his dad, Howard's son is a philanthropist and writer who works with their family foundation.

Peter Andrew Buffett

Warren's youngest child is probably the most unique of the bunch. Peter Andrew Buffett, 68, is a musician and composer, winning an Emmy Award for scoring the documentary Wisconsin: An American Portrait. And when Peter was growing up, he was kept in the dark of his family's immense wealth.

"It was when I was in my 20s that my mom and I talked at some point, because there [my dad] was, on [the] list [of the richest Americans]," Peter explained to Forbes in September 2013. "And we laughed about it, because we said, 'Well, isn't it funny? You know, we know who we are, but everybody's treating us differently now.' It was a fascinating switch, although not a huge one, because we didn't live in that world, or a cultural framework, where there was a lot of wealth being shown. Our friends were as surprised as I was."

Peter Buffett's personal life

The musician, who is worth some $300 million, was married to his first wife, Mary Buffett, for 12 years before they divorced. She had twin daughters from a previous relationship, who Peter subsequently adopted. Three years after he and Mary divorced, he married his second wife, Jennifer Buffett in 1996.
