Naked Eyes singer Peter Byrne, behind hit 'Always Something There To Remind Me,' dies at 74

Beloved '80s singer Peter Byrne died at 74 on September 14, 2026.

The Naked Eyes star behind hits including "Always Something There to Remind Me" and "Promises Promises" died "peacefully in Los Angeles, California."

The official Naked Eyes website announced his death on Wednesday, September 23, revealing that Peter passed away after a "brief illness." A cause of death was not disclosed.

Peter, born in Islington, North London, founded Naked Eyes in 1982 with his music partner, Rob Fisher.

The new wave duo's 1983 debut album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and released as Burning Bridges in the UK, and as self-titled Naked Eyes in the US.

It reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200, and they also achieved four top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 across their two studio albums in 1983 and 1984.

"Always Something There to Remind Me," a synth-pop cover of the 1963 song originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, reached number eight and "Promises, Promises" reached number 11.

Their second and final album, Fuel for the Fire, reached the charts with "When the Lights Go Out" at 37 and "(What) In the Name of Love" at 39.

Peter's other notable work included backing vocals on Stevie Wonder's 1985 hit "Part-Time Lover," as well as songwriting for film and television, including "I Am The Cute One" for twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 1993.

Rob died in 1999 at the age of 42 after surgery for cancer, and Peter continued writing, recording, and touring the world.

In 2001, he released a solo album, The Real Illusion, as well as three more Naked Eyes albums: Fumbling with the Covers in 2007, Disguise the Limit in 2021, and a remaster of the original Naked Eyes self-titled album in 2025. 

Peter is survived by his siblings Eileen, Sandy, Carol, and Steve; his three children, Merlin, Dylan, and Chloe; and his ex-wife, Elena.
