Perms, shoulder pads and sequins, the 1980s had some memorable style signatures that were worn by Hollywood icons like Maureen O'Hara, Shelley Winters and Doris Day, who were all in their sixties during this era.

But when you compare their style to how 60-something stars like Julianne Moore and Sandra Bullock look today, it couldn't be more different! Let's take a look…

1/12

Peggy Lee and Julianne Moore

Peggy Lee continued to perform during her sixties in the 1980s, and always maintained her signature glamorous look with a platinum blonde wig, animal print outfits and sequin embellishments. She even bedazzled a cane she used for mobility issues with sequins!

Now 65, actress Julianne Moore could easily be mistaken for being much younger with her gorgeous auburn hair and youthful style such as this double denim ensemble.

Maureen O'Hara and Demi Moore

Maureen O'Hara turned 60 in 1980, and her style was very different to her counterparts today. With a head scarf, oversized sunglasses and coat, her outfits were much more conservative than Demi Moore, who showcased her incredible figure in this head-to-toe leather ensemble at Milan Fashion Week at the age of 63.

Laraine Day and Jennifer Grey

A hugely successful actress in the 1940s, Laraine Day's career came to an end when she was in her sixties, with a small role in Murder, She Wrote. It was around the time that Jennifer Grey rose to fame in Dirty Dancing, and she continues to act now at the age of 66. With her long wavy hair and glamorous sequin skirt, she looks youthful beyond her years.

Shelley Winters and Meg Ryan

With her permed hair, satin shirt and statement accessories, Shelley Winters' style was characteristic of the 1980s. In comparison, Meg Ryan's style is much edgier and more elegant, showing how fashion trends have changed dramatically over the past 40 years.

Lana Turner and Marisa Tomei

Hollywood icon Lana Turner maintained her signature platinum blonde curls into her sixties, alongside glamorous red carpet looks with sequins and fur. However, when you compare her style to Spider-Man star Marisa Tomei, it's clear that the way women in their sixties dress is completely different today.

Nancy Reagan and Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan dressed very conservatively, with cropped hair and minimal makeup. While Michelle Obama also wore lots of smart suits during her own time as First Lady, she is also known for her sense of style, often wearing colourful outfits including this youthful co-ord.

Betty Hutton and Paula Abdul

Another leading lady who loved a perm in the 1980s was singer, actress and comedian Betty Hutton, who was a huge star in the 1940s. Now 62, fellow multi-talented star Paula Abdul favours a much more head-turning look like this sculptural sheer gown she wore to the American Music Awards in May 2026.

Betty White and Michelle Yeoh

Golden Girls icon Betty White hit the red carpet in this shimmering gown in 1989, at the age of 67. While metallics are still a favourite of celebs today, the shape and style of 64-year-old Michelle Yeoh's gown is very different, and gives a much more youthful look paired with her sleek ponytail.

9/12

Doris Day and Sandra Bullock

Doris Day showcased eighties style in this statement blouse with her hair in a voluminous bob as she attended the Golden Globes in 1989. While cropped hair was often considered essential for women over a certain age, modern day stars like Sandra Bullock often continue to wear their hair much longer into their 60s and beyond.

Ava Gardner and Vanessa Williams

Draped scarves, bouncy curls and statement accessories were a big part of the red carpet aesthetic for 60-something women in the 1980s, just like Ava Gardner. In comparison, there are no clear cut style rules for women today; from slinky dresses to trouser suits, anything goes.

11/12

Lauren Bacall and Sarah Jessica Parker

Actress Lauren Bacall was no stranger to a sharp suit, often power dressing in a blazer and tailored trousers. Although today's stars still love tailored outfits, their styling is often very different, with suits paired with silky camisoles and oversized silhouettes, as demonstrated by Sarah Jessica Parker.

12/12

Angela Lansbury and Courteney Cox

Nothing says 80s style quite like a power shoulder statement blouse like this one worn by Angela Lansbury in 1989. In contrast, former Friends star Courteney Cox, 62, looks much more relaxed and laidback in this cream ensemble, with her hair tied back in a ponytail.
