Michael Douglas has opened up about his relationship with actress Julia Roberts, revealing why the pair are no longer friends.
In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old recalled a "super-drunk" incident that occurred at a Golden Globes party. Michael admitted he confronted Julia in 1990 after she put her arm around his then 13-year-old son.
In 1990, Michael produced the sci-fi horror movie Flatliners, which starred Julia alongside her then-boyfriend, Kiefer Sutherland. At the time, Michael struggled with addiction. "The thing is, when I am acting in front of the camera, I am so nervous that I wouldn’t dream of showing up loaded because it would make me paranoid," he wrote. "Acting kept me in line and on my toes. But producing comes with a lot of wet lunches and not having to be ‘on’ for a whole set of cast and crew."
Michael shared that the altercation with Julia was "a wildly embarrassing incident" that "stuck with me for years."
"We were at the bar, and Julia had her arm around my son, kind of nuzzling him. To me, in that moment, he looked stunned. … I was pretty drunk," he explained.
Michael continued: "I told her, 'Take your hands off my son and take that Golden Globe and stick it where the sun don’t shine.' The next morning, my producing partner Rick Bieber called me and said, 'We need to talk, Michael.' I’d crossed a line with the most in-demand young actress in Hollywood. I sent Julia roses with an apology for my behavior, and then back in the production office, I apologized to her and Kiefer in person."
Julia and Kiefer forgave Michael for his behavior and finished filming Flatliners. "I remained friends with Kiefer. Julia, not so much," Michael revealed.
In a different chapter of his memoir, the producer shared that Julia was initially up for Sharon Stone's role in 1992 movie Basic Instinct. However, the star passed on the part.
