Eric Dane's posthumous memoir reveals a heartbreaking moment with his daughter Billie, when he could no longer give her their customary hug after a ballet performance.
Recalling her December 2025 production of The Nutcracker, the actor described how ALS had affected his arms. "Billie, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry I can't wrap my arms around you," he wrote in an excerpt published by People.
Billie embraced him instead, and they cried together. Eric found beauty in the moment, imagining a new tradition with his daughter.
The Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria star died on 19 February, aged 53, leaving behind Billie and her younger sister Georgia, whom he shared with actress Rebecca Gayheart.
Eric Dane's memoir leaves a legacy for his daughters
My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments will be published on 3 November by The Open Field.
The book follows significant days in Eric's life, from his early ambitions in Hollywood and recovery from addiction to the perspective he gained after his ALS diagnosis.
Alongside those recollections, he also considered the future his daughters would experience without him. His publisher describes these passages as reflections intended for the girls to revisit as they grow older.
The memoir brings together his experiences as an actor and father, including the unexpected success of his Grey's Anatomy appearance in 2006. Originally intended as a guest role, his portrayal of Dr Mark Sloan became a defining part of his career.
Rebecca Gayheart remained by Eric Dane's side
Eric publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. He and Rebecca married in October 2004. Although she filed for divorce in 2018, she requested that the petition be dismissed in March 2025, shortly before he shared his diagnosis publicly.
Following his death, a statement from his representative confirmed that he had spent his final days with friends, Rebecca and their daughters.
It also recognised his advocacy during his illness: "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight."
Eric Dane's message to Billie and Georgia
The memoir follows another deeply personal message Eric left for his children. In November 2025, he recorded an interview with Brad Falchuk for Netflix's Famous Last Words, knowing the conversation would be released only after his death.
At the end, Falchuk left him alone to address Billie and Georgia directly. Eric remembered family beach holidays and offered advice about living in the present, finding a passion, choosing supportive friends and facing difficulties with determination.
The interview was released on 20 February, giving viewers an opportunity to hear him speak about fatherhood in his own words.
His message to the girls ended: "Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."
