Hollywood continues to mourn the tragic loss of Sir Patrick Stewart, with one of his own children being the latest to pay tribute.
The acting legend's son Daniel Stewart reacted to the news of his father's passing on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a memory from their time together on stage.
Daniel, 59, posted a photograph of himself carrying his father on stage while in a play together, with no caption or message alongside it. The poignant tribute sparked an outpouring of support for the actor.
"Was so sorry to hear the news Dan. Thinking of you!" one wrote, with another adding: "Deepest sympathies and condolences on the loss of your father. He was a great man and an incredible actor, he will be greatly missed and never forgotten."
Patrick Stewart's family life
The X-Men star was married three times throughout his lifetime, welcoming his two children with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. They were married from 1966 to 1990, welcoming their son Daniel in 1967 and Sophia in 1972.
The marriage ended in part due to Stewart's affair with actress Jessica Hetrick, to whom he was later engaged, although they called it quits before tying the knot.
In 2000, he married Wendy Neuss, one of the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Their union was short-lived, ending in divorce in 2003. A few months before his divorce, he'd started dating Lisa Dillon, and remained with her until 2007.
In 2013, after five years of dating, he married singer Sunny Ozell, who was nearly four decades his junior. They were married at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, with Sir Ian McKellen officiating the ceremony, before a more lavish wedding ceremony in Nevada a few weeks later.
Patrick Stewart's "non-existent" relationship with his children
In the lead-up to the release of his memoir in 2023, the Star Trek actor opened up to The Irish Independent about his estranged relationship with his children in recent years. "There's not a day that goes by that I'm not pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them," he said.
In fact, he'd wished that his ability as a father resembled more of the wisdom he brought to screen playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard. "I think it might have been more the one I wished I was."
"Given that I'm separated from my children now, we don't have relationships, they have become very important," Stewart continued. "I never thought that this would happen, but both my children are in their 50s, they're not children anymore, they're adults. And my relationship with them is practically non-existent."
In an essay written for Metro in 2012, Daniel noted his father's absence in his early years due to his acting career, explaining why it pushed him to be a better father to his own children. "My father's an incredibly ambitious man and growing up there was no question his career came before his family," he penned.
"I wanted to be around more for my children than my dad was for me, my dad's ambition was his primary driving force. That's why he's where he is, it's not by accident. He knew what he wanted in his career and worked aggressively to get it."
