Wedding day accessories: celebrity-inspired headpieces for guests

15 JANUARY 2013

A special occasion deserves a special hat and finding a design for that wedding you've been invited to can often be a puzzling process.

To keep your search simple, here's our celebrity-inspired guide to finding the perfect headpiece that sets off your hairstyle and completes your bridal outfit.

These cold months call for something extra luxurious in both texture and colour to inject some warmth into your overall wedding look.

Of course, the Duchess of Cambridge has seasonal styling refined and is a great source of inspiration for anyone planning wedding day attire. The structured velvet creation Kate wore to Sandringham on Christmas Day in 2011 was simple, yet effective, drawing focus to its berry hue and tipped downwards to reveal impeccably styled curls.

Another successful number was the broad-brimmed hat that the Duchess wore to the wedding of Zara Phillips to Mike Tindall. Expertly half-tilted, it revealed a blossoming of peach flowers that complemented the Jane Troughton embroidered coat she wore on the day.

It's all about the attention to detail which Kate never fails to miss. Complementing colours, embellishments and proportion to the rest of your outfit is key to her style choices.

Remember that on the day you are wearing a hat and not the other way around. Whether large or small it is important you feel confident enough to pull the look off as this will make you shine in photographs.

If you're worried about drowning in headwear take note from Kate Winslet and the super-stylish Sarah Jessica Parker who are experts in sporting eye-catching accessories.

Looking the epitome of elegance as she collected her CBE from the Queen last year, Kate Winslet showed that even the smallest of hats can have a huge impact.

The magpie-inspired commission was created by the up-and-coming mask-maker and milliner, Natalie Ellner, and featured real feathers that folded down over the actress' face in vintage, art-deco fashion.

For the petite Sex in the City star, smaller structured creations in glittering jewels keep her features perfectly proportioned. But for those of a taller stature than the fashionable SJP, go for wider brims and avoid tall hats that will add to your height.

Whilst attending the New York City Ballet Gala in September, Sarah kept her hair pulled back in true ballerina style, fitting it in place with large violet carnations that mirrored the embellished designs that decorated her full-length, flowing gown. Making for a spectacular spring look, flowers are the easiest way to update your wedding outfit.

And the gorgeous actress sparkled on Crown Oaks Day with a studded headpiece that beautifully adorned her curly updo.
