Big-hearted Shakira brings smiles in Haiti

Colombian bombshell Shakira visited Haiti this week on a mission of mercy.

Her Barefoot foundation has donated $400,000 towards the reconstruction of a historic school damaged in last year's devastating earthquake.

There was excitement at the Elie Dubois high school when the singer arrived to the strains of her hit Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).

After shaking her famous snake hips with the students, the diva told journalists: "I'm convinced that the key to a dignified future for Haiti is through education".

Founded in 1913, the establishment in Port-au-Prince was the first in the country to provide vocational training for girls.

"It's so nice that we have a star coming and that she's coming to help the school," said Joselourdes Jean-Paul, a 19-year-old student.

"With the new school, we're going to learn more and learn better."
