Michael Jackson manslaughter trial postponed

Wednesday May 4, 2011

Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was supposed to stand trial for involuntary manslaughter later this month.

But the date has been pushed back to September, a judge ruled on Tuesday.

Defense lawyers told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor that they needed more time to prepare arguments against new prosecution witnesses.

The 171 people who had been called as jurors will be excused, and a new panel will be called in on September 8 for new jury selection.

The doctor has pleaded not guilty of giving Michael a lethal dose of Propofol - a powerful surgical anaethetic intended for clinical use only - to tackle a debilitating bout of insomnia.
