'Strictly' winner Kara Tointon waltzes into West End

Following her success on Strictly Come Dancing, Kara Tointon has been cast in a coveted West End role.

The 27-year-old former EastEnder has landed the part of Eliza Doolittle in the eagerly-anticipated London revival of Pygmalion, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Kara will appear as Cockney flower girl Eliza opposite Rupert Everett as Henry Higgins.

She is believed to have seen off other high-profile hopefuls, including Katie Price and Billie Piper, to win the role.

"Kara is absolutely thrilled," a friend told the newspaper.

"She was wondering how on earth she could follow her success on Strictly, but now, thanks to Philip Prowse, who is directing the production, she has the chance to establish herself as a major star.

"She has already started rehearsals and the chemistry between her and Everett is electrifying."

The West End production of Pygmalion opens at the Garrick Theatre on May 9.
