April is a particularly poignant month for John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston. Although the couple celebrated the ninth birthday of their daughter Ella Bleu on the third of the month, their beloved only son Jett, whom they lost to a seizure disorder in January, would have turned 17 on the 13th.
Pals have revealed to US magazine People that the couple are slowly coming to terms with the tragedy, though, and Ella's celebrations took place "just as they would any other year," says a close friend.
Since Jett's death in the Bahamas on January 2 the couple have kept a low profile, preferring to remain at home in Florida as friends give them space to heal in private. Long-time pal Olivia Newton-John, who starred with the 45-year-old actor in 1978 film Grease, reveals: "John is a strong man, but we want to leave him in peace."
"To lose a loved one – it's the worst time in anyone's life," adds the actress, who was devastated when her then-boyfriend disappeared at sea in 2005 and was presumed dead. It later emerged he had faked his own death to avoid debts. The pair are slowly starting to reach out again, however.
"They aren't secluding themselves or paralyzed," says the family friend, who spend time with the coiuple recently. "[Seeing them] was like old times. Nothing awkward and no topics to dance around. There were smiles."
