X Factor star James Arthur has said that being insecure keeps him grounded.
The star has offered a string of spellbinding performances that have led stars such as Emeli Sandé and Labrinth to line up to praise him.
James, however, appreciates the praise but believes that a humble approach is the best way forward.
The 24-year-old said: "I think you've just got to remember who you were before all of this and probably go back to a place where you did the same things that everyone else does.
"You've got to have a level of insecurity to keep your feet on the ground. No one here's got above their station or think they're any bigger than what they are."
Hailing from the Teeside, northerner James has also struck up a friendship with fellow contestant and Essex boy Rylan Clark. Rylan, who is known for his outlandish performances, has defended his onstage persona.
He said: "I'm the furthest thing from it. I get on with absolutely everyone but when I'm on stage I've got to try and hold my ground because I'm not the strongest singer there and I've got a lot more to give when it comes to performance."
Despite being victim of some of judge Gary Barlow's harshest critiques, the singer insists that the pair do get along well.
Rylan said: "Gary's lovely, on stage he's Borelow, off stage he's Banter Barlow."
