Larry the rat catcher is newest addition to Downing St

After weeks of speculation over what to do about a potential rat problem at 10 Downing Street, it seems David Cameron has resorted to more old-fashioned methods of pest control.

A four-year-old tabby cat called Larry (pictured in his new home) has been welcomed to try and resolve the situation.

A Downing Street spokesman described the former stray as a "good ratter" with "a high chase-drive and hunting instinct" developed during his time on the streets.

The Prime Minister also released a statement: "He came highly recommended to me by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, who did a fantastic job looking after him."

"I'm sure he will be a great addition to Downing Street and will charm our many visitors," added Mr Cameron.

Larry is the latest in a long line of Downing Street cats, known unofficially as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.
