William feared he would lose ring before proposal

Prince William has revealed he was frightened of losing the engagement ring before he had the chance to slip it on Kate MIddleton's finger.

During the couple's first joint interview, the second-in-line told how he had smuggled the sparkler to Africa in his rucksack for the proposal.

But he didn't dare let the bag and its precious cargo – his late mum's priceless diamond encrusted sapphire engagement ring – out of his sight.

"I had been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go," says the 28-year-old.

"Everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew if this thing disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble."
