Sophie Wessex in Bangladesh on sight mission

It looked like a scene straight out of Slumdog Millionaire, but it was Bangladesh, not India, that the Countess of Wessex was visiting to highlight a global initiative aimed at eliminating avoidable blindness.
 
In her role as patron of Vision 2020: The Right To Sight, Sophie toured several Seeing Is Believing and Sightsavers International projects which deliver eye-care services to difficult-to-access communities in Dhaka. Some 750,000 people cannot see in the country yet 80 per cent of all blindness is due to cataracts, which can be treated easily and cost-effectively.
 
Saving sight is a cause close to the Countess’s heart. Her five-year-old daughter Lady Louise Windsor suffered from the condition exotropia, an outward-turning eye, which has been corrected by surgery. “For every one person that is helped through sight restoration, a whole family is helped. I’m so encouraged by all I’ve seen here,” Sophie explained.
