First black Miss England as Linford Christie's niece wins

Already highly ranked in the 400 metres and heptathlon events, professional track and field athlete Rachel Christie is on the way to following in her famous uncle's gold medal footsteps.

And meanwhile, the sporty 20-year-old has made a name for herself in a very different competition.

Having swapped her running shoes for high heels, part-time model Rachel was named the new Miss England on Tuesday.

"It means the world; it really does mean so much to me," the beauty queen said as she tearfully accepted the trophy.

"One of my reasons for doing Miss England in the first place was because I wanted to show people, the younger generation especially, that you can do something positive with your life."

And it was an achievement that Linford's niece nearly missed out on. After becoming involved in a car crash last week, Rachel was left with left whiplash and bruised legs.

The sporty star, whose uncle won Olympic gold in the 200 metres in Barcelona in 1992, is due to compete for the Miss World crown in South Africa later this year.
