The pomp and the ceremony to  inaugurate Frederik VII Palace officially - after a swanky six-year facelift  - left Princess Mary and Prince Frederik's little ones unimpressed.

It seems four-year-old Christian, the future king, and his sister Isabella, three, found the music too loud for their delicate ears.

Their parents must be thrilled, though – especially since the work on their home in Copenhagen has been completed before expectant Mary gives birth to twins in January.

Costing £24.5 million, the restoration involved replacing the roof and mosaic floors in the 17th-century palace inside the Amalienborg royal complex, where Queen Margrethe also resides.

In an effort to preserve the sense of history while incorporating ultra-modern touches, contemporary Danish artists were brought in to update the fittings and fixtures.

The plans also included the addition of a swimming pool and a roof terrace so the Australian-born princess can entertain guests with a barbecue.
