New dad David Cameron to take paternity leave

Thursday August 26, 2010

Prime Minister David Cameron is to become the first British leader to take paternity leave while in office.

Although no definitive plans have been made regarding the timing, it is expected that the PM will not take paternity leave in a block, but will rather split it up into parts.

The move has been welcomed by campaigners for greater parental leave rights.

"David Cameron has said that he wishes to build a family-friendly society.

"Hopefully, this special time for the prime minister will encourage him to take steps to make fatherhood easier for other British dads," said Dr Katherine Rake, chief executive of the Family and Parenting Institute.

Meanwhile, it's been revealed that new arrival Florence will follow in the family tradition by taking on a name with a connection to the legend of Camelot.

Their four-year-old son is called Arthur Elwin and their six-year-old daughter Nancy's middle name is Gwen, a shortened version of the Welsh form of Guinevere, King Arthur's queen consort.

The couple have given their new baby daughter the middle name Endellion.

According to legend St Endellion was the god-daughter of King Arthur.
