Joanna moved to tears by Ghurka's 18-hour trek to see her

Tuesday July 28, 2009

Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley was overwhelmed with emotion as a very special visitor made his way to see her in Kathmandu this week.

Eighty-four-year-old Harka Bahadur Pun - who fought in WWII on the same battlefields as the actress' father - travelled 18 hours through the night to meet her.

And while the 63-year-old received a rapturous welcome from hundreds of former servicemen on her first trip to Nepal, it was this particular meeting that brought a tear to her eye.

Joanna, the daughter of a British Army officer who fought in Burma, began her high-profile battle to win the right for former Ghurka soldiers to settle in Britain because her father would have been "overwhelmed with shame" at their treatment.

Thanks to her efforts many Nepalese soldiers who served with the British Army will have the right to settle in the UK.
