Roman Polanski vows to challenge US extradition

Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski will challenge his arrest and any attempts to force him back to the US, his lawyer has confirmed.

The 76-year-old was taken into custody in Switzerland on a 32-year-old arrest warrant from the US.

He went on the run from the States after admitting to sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

At the time the Polish director pleaded guilty as part of a plea bargain, but then fled abroad, claiming the judge had reneged on the agreement.

The filmmaker, now a French citizen, has not set foot in the US for more than 30 years.

He was detained on Saturday as he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy is said to be following the case "with great attention", and "shares the hope of a quick resolution to the situation".
