Blood Diamond actor David Harewood has just returned from South Africa after wrapping filming on what he describes as his most inspiring role yet – playing South African leader Nelson Mandela
The 43-year-old screen star, who made his Robin Hood debut as Friar Tuck in the new series last Saturday, stars as the anti-apartheid leader in a BBC film entitled Mrs Mandela.
David says playing the iconic figure was an emotional experience, especially when his performance was praised by locals. "I had black South Africans shake my hand, saying they never thought anyone could do him justice," says the Birmingham-born screen star. "That was very moving for me."
Appearing opposite David in the drama, which will be screened on BBC Two later this year, is Oscar winner Sophie Okonedo in the title role as his wife Winnie. Red Riding actor David Morrissey also makes an appearance as police interrogator Theunis Swanepoel.
