Two of the silver screen's hottest female talents met up this week when renowned character actress Meryl Streep joined Welsh bombshell Catherine Zeta-Jones at the Christopher Reeve 'Magical Evening' gala. Meryl, who has been keeping a relatively low profile of late, decided the fundraiser would provide an ideal moment for her to step back into the limelight. The 56-year-old is well-known for her commitment to health charities, so it was no surprise to see her at the bash, which was staged to raise money for the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

Her fellow Oscar-winner, who was looking as stunning as ever in a figure-hugging strapless black creation, had extra reason to celebrate as she and her husband Michael Douglas were honoured with the Spirit of Courage award in recognition of their charity work.

And organisers were no doubt delighted with movie veteran Paul Newman, who took to the stage at one point to urge his fellow A-listers to reach for their chequebooks. The iconic actor, who had originally pledged $50,000 to the organisation, decided to up his contribution on the spot. "What the hell, make it $100,000," he declared.

Robin Williams and Glen Close were on hand to do their bit as well, but it was the Superman actor's widow who provoked the biggest round of applause. Dana Reeve, who announced she had been diagnosed with lung cancer last August, showed she shared her husband's fighting spirit when her turn came to say a few words. "I'm beating the odds and defying every statistic the doctors can throw me," affirmed the 44-year-old. "My prognosis looks better all the time."
