Share this:

Margaret Thatcher vs Marilyn Monroe: this would've been a fascinating contest between two women who were influential in very different ways. The film world has set up a head-to-head with the announcement of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams. Veteran actress Meryl's uncanny portrayal of Baroness Thatcher has caught the public's imagination.....Meanwhile, Brokeback Mountain star Michelle slips into Marilyn's skin for her flick about the silver screen siren in My Week with Marilyn. They are among five actresses shortlisted for outstanding performances at the 2012 ceremony.

Also in the running are Tilda Swinton, for her role in We Need To Talk About Kevin, Viola David for The Help and Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs. Michelle's co-star Kenneth Branagh features for his role as Sir Laurence Olivier in the Monroe biopic. British actresses dominate the shortlist for the outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or mini-series, picking up three of the five nominations. Dame Maggie Smith is recognised for her role in ITV1 costume drama Downton Abbey, Oscar winner Kate Winslet gets a nod for Mildred Pierce and Emily Watson is shortlisted for her part in the Fred West drama Appropriate Adult. The awards, voted for by other actors, will be handed out in LA on Sunday January 29.
