Katie Holmes' big night finally arrived on Thursday as she opened her new Broadway play, Dead Accounts. Dressed in a red trenchcoat and polka dot trousers, Katie seemed happy and relaxed ahead of her debut, smiling from ear to ear as she made her way to the theatre. In 2008, she made her Broadway debut in All My Sons and on that occasion, her ex-husband Tom Cruise provided support from the front row of the auditorium. This time though, the actress had two very special people supporting her from the stands, her parents, Martin and Kathleen.

Katie is starring as Lorna, the highly-strung sister of a con man whose sudden return home — with millions of dollars in hand — launches his family into a comedic, money-charged frenzy. Dead Accounts is clearly something the Dawson's Creek star is passionate about. Katie recently discussed the new project in front of a live audience alongside playwright Theresa Rebeck, director Jack O'Brien and her co-star Judy Greer at The Greene Space in New York.

She said playing such a feisty character in the play was a dream come true: "Finally I get to yell!" Katie joked. "What I really loved about this character was she's strong underneath it all. I like her values, I like that she's trying to figure it all out and really cares for her family." When asked why she wanted to do Broadway, mum-of-one Katie added: "I thought it would be so challenging. Because I was so young when I started working, I was always trying to catch up." Later that night, after wowing a crowd that included Brooke Shields and Twilight star Maggie Grace, an overjoyed Katie joined her co-stars at the after party. Katie looked as glamorous as ever in a multicoloured floral dress, which she teamed with a yellow clutch and black heels.

Katie's big night comes after spending Thanksgiving with her parents back in her native Ohio whilst her daughter Suri flew to England to be reunited with dad Tom Cruise, who is currently filming there.

Speaking on a US chat show 33-year-old Katie said "we have Thanksgiving off, so I'm going to have the chance to go home with my family." The star added that she had been "warming up" for the day's traditional feast by already having enjoyed "a little bit of turkey and stuffing and derby pie which was awesome. I thought, 'why am I starting this early' but it was amazing and I'm actually not sick of it, I'm ready for more."
