Five years on: Why we'll always miss Heath Ledger

Versatility was Heath's strong suit. He fled from the pretty boy routine that Hollywood had in mind for him.

Instead he was attracted to challenging roles like that of Ennis Del Mar, a gay cowboy struggling with his own homophobia and unable to fulfill his longing for love in 2005's Brokeback Mountain, where he appeared with Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured).

"I wasn't going to have fun doing a teen movie again.... I don't want to spend the rest of my youth doing this in this industry. There's so much I want to discover," Heath said, explaining his choices.
