The intense work schedule took its toll and Heath spoke about his difficulty sleeping, saying: "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going."

On January 22, 2008, the actor was found dead with the cause of death later declared as an overdose of prescription drugs, ordered to combat his insomnia and anxiety.

A year later, the role earned him a posthumous best supporting actor Oscar, along with a Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Critics' Choice Award.
