She decamped to Tinseltown but nothing has dampened Catherine Zeta-Jones' love of her homeland. "I'm very proud to be Welsh," she says. "The only real ambition I have ever had was to get to Hollywood, become a big star and marry a big star. Now I've achieved it I'm really proud, but I'll always love coming home to Wales." The Oscar winner owns properties in New York, Bermuda, California and Majorca,
but says her £2-million mansion in Swansea is still where she feels most
at home.
The inimitable Shirley Bassey, meanwhile, has come a long way since she was
born into Cardiff's once-notorious docklands district of Tiger Bay. Now a
bona-fide showbiz icon, the glitzy singer is still showing the world's
wannabe starlets what a real diva sounds like.
Then there's the sensational Katherine Jenkins, who has become the
fastest-selling female opera singer since Maria Callas. Originally hailing from Neath in South Wales, the pretty blonde has hit as
many high notes on the red carpet as she has in the world's auditoriums. And she did her country's rugby team proud earlier this year when she performed the Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau before their Six Nations clash against England.
