BRITISH ACTRESSES BASK IN GLORY AT INDIE FILM AWARDS

One of UK cinema's most celebrated sex symbols was applauded by a roll-call of the industry's hottest young actresses when she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award this week. Dame Helen Mirren spent the evening rubbing shoulders with the likes of Rosamund Pike, Emilia Fox and Helen McCrory after she was presented with a special trophy by her fellow screen veteran Charles Dance on Wednesday.

Her latest movie The Queen was also recognised with the gong for best screenplay at this year's British Independent Film Awards, although it lost out in the best movie category to the gritty skinhead drama This Is England. Renowned director Ken Loach meanwhile picked up the special jury prize, while Iris star Jim Broadbent took home the award for outstanding contribution to British cinema.

The spotlight wasn't only shining on more established stars, however, as some of the UK's up-and-coming talents were also basking in glory. Scottish actor Tony Curran, who has appeared in such movies as Gladiator and Miami Vice, was named winner of the coveted best actor prize for his appearance in the low-budget indie film Red Road. And his co-star Kate Dickie managed to beat off the challenge of Juliette Binoche, Robin Wright Penn and even Dame Helen to win best actress.
