Cannes 2012: Sultry red lips and smokey dark eyes rule

Share this:

Many of you may be reaching for your pastel colours and pale palettes now the sun has come out, but hold off as one of Hollywood's oldest trends has proved it still rules. This year at Cannes it has been all about luscious red pouts and smouldering sexy eyes. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jessie J and Kelly Brook have been parading the red carpets of Cannes with their sizzling gowns taking most of the glory, but amongst this glitz and glamour this key beauty trend stands out above everything else.

The leading ladies have teamed their luxurious dresses of all colours with vibrant red lips, which immediately gives a fuller, more effective appearance. And of course, this classy look just has to be completed with smokey dark eyes. To achieve this look, choose a palette of several different shades of eyeshadow in tones of brown, black and grey. Dust the eye lid all over with a pale shade to even out the skin tone. Then start at the top lash line with the darkest colour you have and slowly build up the lighter colours as you blend upwards. Finish the look with a slick of black liner on the upper lash line, along the lower lash line and on the water line of the eye. Finally, apply several coats of black mascara focusing on the outer lashes for a more Hollywood look.

When it comes to lipstick, the celebrities in Cannes have proved any shade of red works, but brighter reds tend to work best in summer. Save the darker hues until the autumnul seasons. We have seen both matte and glossy styles at this year's events, so both work. A key tip:Buy a lip liner in exactly the same shade as your favourite lipstick, from the same brand. Apply this first to ensure you get a neat outline, and to stop your lipstick bleeding, then apply your lipstick as usual. For a high shine look simply add a clear gloss - and remember to keep this in your bag so you can reapply throughout the evening.
