The Danish royal family were united on Sunday as they came together in celebration of Queen Margrethe's 83rd birthday.

It was an important show of unity; in January, at the behest of the queen, four of her grandchildren were stripped of their HRH titles causing great upset amongst those affected.

The decision impacted her younger son Prince Joachim's four children – Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, who he shares with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and Henrik, 13, and 11-year-old Athena, his children with Princess Marie.

In an effort to streamline her monarchy, Margrethe decreed that the children should no longer be titled Prince or Princess, and now go by Count of Countess of Monpezat.

But the family looked to have put any upset behind them at the weekend as they celebrated with their much-loved mother and grandmother.

A short time later, however, and it was a very different scene for Nikolai, Felix and their cousin, Prince Vincent.

Vincent is the youngest son of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary and the older twin brother of Princess Josephine.

Gone was the pomp and grandeur of Amalienborg palace. Instead, the trio were pictured attending a football match a short time after attending Margrethe's private birthday celebrations.

Nikolai, Felix and Vincent were seen in the crowd, accompanied by security, with the older siblings sweetly taking care of Vincent.

They were all dressed down, with Nikolai looking inconspicuous in a black baseball cap, white hoodie and black jacket. At one point, he was seen waving and smiling to someone in the crowd, a big smile on his face.

"My whole family and I are of course very sad," the 23-year-old said in September. "We are, as my parents have also stated, in shock at this decision and at how quickly it has actually gone. I don't understand why it had to happen this way."

When asked about how the decision has affected his relationship with his grandmother, he said: "I don't think I need to elaborate on that."
