Martine McCutcheon delighted audiences attending a performance of My Fair Lady the other night when she temporarily returned to the starring role. The 24-year-old EastEnders actress has appeared in only a handful of performances due to a severe throat infection.

Although doctors had declared her well enough to take part in last night’s performance and may give Martine the go-ahead to do a couple more shows this week, they have also said there’s little chance of her returning to the stage on a permanent basis at the moment. The actress underwent a major operation on her throat several weeks ago and concern over possible long-term damage to her voice is the reason given for the restrictions. She remains under strict medical supervision.

Martine, who has also suffered from flu and glandular fever, attended rehearsals again last week but was pictured looking exhausted as she was helped into a car following the gruelling session. Since she became ill soon after the opening of the show – which won her rave reviews for her portrayal of the lowly born flower girl – the lead role has been filled by understudy Alexandra Jay.

The National Theatre show is soon to move to the West End for the summer season, where it is expected to draw huge audiences.
