The nominees for this year’s Brit Awards have been announced, with cartoon band Gorillaz leading the list with six nods. Not far behind are pint-sized popstress Kylie Minogue and 12-time winner Robbie Williams, each receiving four nominations, and Dido on three.

Gorillaz will be facing off with Jamiroquai, Radiohead, Sterophonics and Travis in the Best Group category, while fending off rivals in Best Single and Best Dance Act. Dido, also up for Best Female Artist, will give the virtual pop group a run for their money for Best Video and Best Album – her debut disc No Angel sold 12 million copies worldwide, and was the best-selling record in Britain last year.

Evergreen artists Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams showed they’re still on top, each vying for four gongs. Kylie, on the cusp of launching her album in the US, is up for International Female Solo Artist against newcomers Alicia Keys, Anastacia and Nelly Furtado. Robbie, a perennial Brit Awards favourite, competes in the Best Single and Best Video category, though neither are from his hit album Swing When You’re Winning, which was released too late to be eligible for the prize.

Legendary acts have been recognised as well in this year’s noms, with Elton John competing for Best Video - with I Want Love - as well as Best Male. Sixties stalwart Bob Dylan is nominated alongside Dr Dre and Shaggy in the International Male category. Former Police front man Sting will be honoured with the outstanding contribution award.

The Brits take place on February 20 at Earl’s Court, airing the following day on ITV.
