Queen Elizabeth II, who has had reason to be concerned about security herself in the past, has asked David Beckham how he is coping in the wake of an alleged kidnap plot against his family.

"She raised the subject of security. And if anyone is going to know about that it's the Queen," said the England captain following his chat with the monarch at a Buckingham Palace reception on Tuesday. "We spoke about increased security and how it would change our lives."

In the wake of the alleged plan to snatch David's wife Victoria and their young sons Brooklyn and Romeo, security has been reinforced at the couple's Herefordshire mansion, dubbed "Beckingham Palace". "It definitely will change things, but it's just something that has to be done," admitted David.

The England team, including father-to-be Michael Owen and coach Sven Goran Eriksson, enjoyed drinks and canapés in the Palace's Blue Room. The squad later joined up with their partners for a meal at London's upmarket eatery San Lorenzo.
