Colin Montgomerie and wife agree to separate

Following weeks of speculation as to the state of their relationship, golfing ace Colin Montgomerie and his wife Eimear have called it a day on their 14-year marriage.

The golfer had flown home this week from the China Masters in order to be with his wife after learning that she intended to file for divorce. After 24 hours together, with communication levels at an all time low, the couple issued a statement saying they have agreed to separate.

Eimear, whose friendship with Love Actually star Hugh Grant has been making headlines this week, met the golfer when she was just 17. She gave up her own ambitions – she studied law – to raise their three children and support Colin in his career. And the couple seemed to have one of the strongest unions in the game until she asked for a divorce in 2000.

"I was the one who encouraged him to the hilt in his career, but it got to the stage when Colin's career was all consuming," Eimear has explained. "The cracks which we had both tried so hard to paper over were becoming impossible to ignore. I was emotionally and physically fatigued. I told Colin it was over."

Colin was devastated. "To say I was shattered is an understatement," he said. The golfing star pulled out all the stops to get his wife back, but friends say the pair had grown apart again in recent weeks. A make-or-break holiday in the Bahamas earlier this month resulted in Colin being asked to leave the family's £2-million Surrey home.
