The Beckhams have suffered a security scare after a man was caught trying to break into their Hertfordshire home. The intruder, who was carrying a can of petrol, was arrested by police after setting off an alarm at the £4.5-million mansion.

Victoria was in the house with her sons Romeo and Brooklyn at the time. David, meanwhile, was in Spain getting ready for pre-season training with his club Real Madrid.

It was around 8pm on Sunday when the man scaled the eight-foot perimeter wall and started to approach the main building. Fortunately he triggered an alarm before he could get to the house and was promptly detained by the Beckhams' private security team. A few minutes later the police arrived and took the suspect into custody.

"Victoria was there with the children on Sunday," explained a spokesman for the glamorous couple. "She had five security guards who stay every night and they were alerted when an alarm went off. The man was quickly apprehended by the security guards, but the alarm is also connected to police so they were quickly on the scene. Victoria was watching television at the time – she was scared, but it's okay now."

The police have since confirmed that a 38-year-old man from Harlow in Essex was arrested for possession of a controlled drug and articles to cause criminal damage.
