Prince Hussain, the son of the Aga Khan, the billionaire spiritual leader of the world's 15 million Shia Ismaili Muslims, has wed his American sweetheart Kristin White in a glittering celebration at a chateau outside Paris.

At the religious ceremony the bride - who took the name Khaliya following her conversion to Islam - drew gasps of admiration as she made her entrance draped in ivory and gold traditional dress. The exquisite look was completed with precious hair jewels. After the service friends and relatives burst into enthusiastic applause, showering the happy couple with confetti.

To take her vows according to civil custom the 30-year-old then slipped into an elegant champagne coloured suit. Crowning her carefully-coiffed blonde locks was a statement-making hat, while at her ears hung diamond-drop earrings.

Love blossomed for the pair during their studies at New York's Columbia University. Princess Khaliya is a consultant on health and development issues. Her 32-year-old husband, who graduated in international relations, heads up environmental projects at the Aga Khan Foundation.

A British citizen, the father of the groom has earnt a reputation as a philanthropist and horsebreeder. His fortune is estimated to be in the region of £6 billion.

Hussain's grandfather Prince Aly Khan was known for romancing several Hollywood actresses, among them Rita Hayworth, who was his wife between 1949 and 1953 and bore him a daughter, Yasmin Aga Khan.
