Party circuit regular Nick Grimshaw picked up his headphones this morning for his first ever Radio 1 breakfast show.

Beginning the show with dynamic exuberance, the "excited and nervous" Nick opened the show with a cheerful "Good morning Britain", and declared that attaining the coveted slot had been his lifelong ambition.

He said: "It's time to follow in the footsteps of people I like, like Chris Moyles and Sara Cox. I'm nervous, happy and desperate to get on with it. It's time to start the difficult job of talking between records. I've been dreaming about this since I was a little boy. Let's do it."

Declaring his love for "big pop songs", the likeable northerner started the show with the infamous track Paris by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Known for its explicit lyrics, Nick joked that if had played the non-edited version it would have been "the world's shortest stint on the Radio 1 breakfast show - three and a half minutes".

The star DJ then chatted with pal Harry Styles about One Direction's new album and video, as well as broadcasting a pre-recorded interview with teen heart-throb Justin Bieber.

Famed for his quirky rocker style and string of celebrity pals, Nick received numerous messages of support from his possé.

Best friend and TV presenter Alexa Chung tweeted " #TEAMGRIMMY!" on Sunday evening in preparation for the DJ's gruelling 6am start.

Pixie Geldof was also quick to declare her support on Sunday evening, and declared that she had purchased a new radio especially for the DJ's first broadcast.

It was revealed that Nick would take over Chris Moyles' breakfast slot in July. Although Greg James was suspected to be the next host in line, dark horse Nick took over the slot in a bid to entice a younger fan base to the station.
