Ever since she started dating George Clooney early in 2014, Amal Clooney has been winning celebrity friends from Bill Murray to Cindy Crawford. Now, Julia Roberts has spoken of her admiration for the acclaimed barrister who won George's heart.

Describing when she first met Amal, presumably when the trio were spotted eating together on 20 April at Claudette in New York, Julia revealed to Extra: "We went out to dinner, I met her at dinner."

When quizzed on whether she approved of George's choice, Julia enthusiastically replied "Oh yes, George doesn't need my approval, but I am quite enamoured of her."

Julia said she is "enamoured" with Amal as she left filming the Late Show with David Letterman

Julia, who made the comment as she finished making her 26th and final appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman before he hands over the reigns to Stephen Colbert, has been working with George on Money Monster.

Speaking about reuniting on set with her Oceans Eleven co-star, Julia said the experience was "amazing."

"Jodie Foster was our director," she added. "George and I were pinching each other just thinking 'How did we end up with this brainiac girl?' It was awesome."

Julia more than approves of her long-time friend's choice of wife

Julia and Amal's close friendship is unsurprising as the 37-year-old has become close to many of George's friends.

Rande Gerber, Cindy Crawford's husband, recently spoke about the bond between his wife and Amal saying.

"They are very compatible," he told the Evening Standard's Deluxe magazine. "Both strong, intelligent, committed women."

The two couples are so close that they both have holiday homes on the same estate in Mexico.

"Originally we were going to build just one big house for us," Rande explained. "But George was single at the time and we have the family, and Cindy said "Hmm. I don't think that's such a good idea. Let's build two houses". It’s all still on one property, so it's like breakfast at George's place, lunch at mine. It feels like one big party."
