Sinead O'Connor has been found safe after going missing in Chicago on Sunday, local police have confirmed. A desperate hunt was launched to find the Irish singer when she said she was going for an early morning bike ride and did not return.

Police in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette had released a statement on Monday saying that they were "seeking to check the wellbeing" of the 49-year-old.

Sinead O'Connor has been found in Chicago

Sinead has struggled with mental health issues for years, and she posted a message to her family - addressing her adult son Jake and talking about her custody battle with her ex-partner Donal Lunny - about two hours after she was last seen.

It is unclear where Sinead was found, or what prompted her disappearance.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer has previously posted distressing updates on social media, including last November when she wrote that she had taken an overdose. She has been open about her suicidal thoughts in the past, and in 2007 told Oprah Winfrey that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had attempted suicide on her 33rd birthday.

Sinead was in the headlines just last week after alleging that US comedian Arsenio Hall had supplied drugs to Prince, who died last month. He has strenuously denied the allegations, and has said he is suing the mother-of-four.

Sinead has been living in Wilmette, on the northern outskirts of Chicago, since February, according to the Chicago Tribune. The singer has performed at least twice in the city this year – with blues star Buddy Guy in January, and at a charity fundraiser in March.

The Dublin-born singer has recorded ten solo albums throughout her career, but has also courted controversy. In 1992 she memorably ripped apart a photo of Pope John Paul II during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, declaring: "Fight the real enemy!"
