Keeley Hawes is booked and busy. Fresh off the success of her latest Channel 4 drama, Falling, the 50-year-old actress is also set to reprise her role as Julie in Prime Video's The Assassin, while returning to period drama as Cassandra in Miss Austen Returns.
In Falling, Keeley plays a devoted nun, Anna, whose life turns upside down when she meets David (Paapa Essiedu), a catholic priest who she catches feelings for.
While viewers are falling for Keeley and Paapa's forbidden chemistry, her own love life off screen is just as sweet.
Keeley is married to Succession actor Matthew Macfadyen, with whom she met on the set of Spooks in 2002 and went on to wed in 2004. The pair share two children, Maggie, 21, and Ralph, 19.
Keeley and Matthew's 'romantic' marriage routine
Speaking about her marriage to Matthew, Keeley told You Magazine in 2020: "It helps that he's the nicest man in the world."
When it comes to making their relationship work with their busy schedules, the actress added: "You have to work at it. We still fill up the dishwasher and put a wash on – that's life – but you also have to make the effort to be romantic.
"When life takes over, going out to dinner together isn't top of your list, but before you know it, the children are older and around less and you're sort of back together again."
Keeley's previous marriage
Keeley was previously married to former cartoonist and professional DJ Spencer McCallum, from 2001 to 2004, with whom she shares a son, Myles, 26. While the pair went their separate ways, Keeley has spoken candidly about their amicable separation and reiterated they have remained close friends.
"Divorce doesn't have to be messy," she told You Magazine. "Like anything, it gets better with time."
She added: "It was a long time ago now, and we have this wonderful son – and my ex-husband is still one of my best friends in the world."
The former couple are reported to live near each other, with Keeley sharing that Spencer and his new partner used to babysit for her and Matthew.
"They are just really wonderful, generous human beings who, ultimately, have always put my son and my other children first," she said. "And I can't thank them enough, really. I love them, they're my family, they're my children's family."
Reflecting on divorce, the Bodyguard actress said: "I think as long as people concentrate on the children above themselves – which is difficult, I know – maybe that's the way to make it work."
